Since 1948, GDA | TLC has bred, raised, trained, and matched guide and service dogs with individuals who benefit most from their support. Their programs serve people who are blind or visually impaired, veterans, children with autism, and professionals in facilities such as police and fire stations, hospitals, courthouses, schools, and more.

Guide Dogs

Guide dogs from GDA | TLC are trained on campus by expert instructors to support individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Beginning around 15 months of age, each dog undergoes 6 to 9 months of intensive training. 

They learn to avoid obstacles, stop at curbs and elevation changes, navigate busy environments, and identify key landmarks. Guide dogs must remain calm, confident, and focused, working as a trusted partner to help their handler travel safely and independently.

Veteran Service Dogs

Veteran service dogs from GDA | TLC are trained to support military veterans living with PTSD, mobility limitations, or other service-related challenges. 

These dogs learn to interrupt PTSD-related behaviors, provide grounding during moments of heightened anxiety, assist with mobility and balance, retrieve items, and support daily routines. 

Their presence promotes stability, confidence, and emotional well-being, helping veterans navigate life with greater independence and peace of mind.

Autism Service Dogs

Autism service dogs are trained to support children with autism by offering comfort, safety, and structure. 

They help reduce sensory overload, provide calming pressure during overwhelming moments, prevent elopement behaviors, and support transitions and routines. Autism service dogs encourage confidence, emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of security for both children and their families.

Facility Dogs

Facility dogs provide emotional support and therapeutic engagement in settings such as schools, hospitals, police and fire departments, in addition to other community spaces. 

They help motivate children during learning activities, comfort individuals experiencing trauma or disability-related challenges, and create a sense of calm during difficult situations. These steady and intuitive dogs work alongside professionals to support healing, engagement, and overall well-being.

Playing Matchmaker

Every purpose-bred puppy begins training early in life. GDA | TLC works primarily with Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, and crossbreeds of both. 

Between 16 and 18 months old, each dog is evaluated and placed on a track: breeder, guide, or service. After successfully completing their final assessments, dogs are thoughtfully matched with students based on pace, home environment, lifestyle to ensure the strongest possible partnership and more.

A Village of Volunteers

Raising a guide or service dog requires an entire community. Volunteers play a vital role, including: 

• Nursery volunteers who socialize newborns
• Kennel volunteers who support in caring for program dogs
• Tour guides, speakers, and administrative volunteers who assist with outreach and events
• Puppy raiser volunteers who provide homes and foundational training for our pups from 8 weeks to 15 months of age
